Musiq Monday: Lena Horne Dies at 92…

Wow! I haven’t done a Musiq Monday in ages (sorry guys) and I’m saddened that I do one  on such a dreary occasion.

If you haven’t already heard, the legendary singer, actress and performer Lena Mary Calhoun Horne, has passed away at the tender age of 92.  Lena Horne was pronounced deceased at a New York-Presbyterian Hospital last night.  Lena Horne,  began her outstanding career at the age of sixteen at the infamous Cotton Club. From there she became the first African American to be signed to a major  Hollywood studio (MGM).

My first memory of  Lena Horne was as a child watching a rerun of a 1973 Sesame Street episode, where she and Kermit the Frog sang” Being Green”. As a child I thought she was pretty and had an amazing voice. She had a wonderful wit and charm about her. I learned of that from her feature on “The Cosby Show”.  Lena Horne’s most notable attribute was her beauty and voice. But she is best known for her wonderful rendition of Stormy Weather.  Though she faced many racial barriers and was the first of  many events, she is and will always be one of the pioneers for current female artists.  Her voice, smile, beauty and grace will definetly be missed but not forgotton.
