MAC 163 Flat Contour Brush: Review, Photos
MAC 163 Flat Contour Brush ($35.00) is a new and limited edition brush designed to be used with MAC’s Pro Sculpting Creams. According to MAC’s website, this brush is listed as an, “ultra-smooth brush with short, luxuriously silky, synthetic bristles and a flat wide top. Multi-purpose, multi-medium, but specifically designed to help create sharp contours with shaping/sculpting products such as Pro Sculpting Cream”.
The 163 brush is densely packed and has a very blunt wide flat top. The website states that this brush is luxuriously silky and ultra smooth, umm I don’t totally agree with that. No, this brush didn’t scratch my face but, it wasn’t super soft either. Though it has been noted that this brush can be used for multiple things. I found it worked best as a contour placement tool. It blended out the Pro Scuplting creams OK but, I still had to use another brush to get total seamless blendablity. For some this brush will not be practical at all, while others will find that this brush perfectly applies sharp and somewhat harsh contour lines. I tried using this to highlight my cheeks and found the brush laid too much product down. I then tried using the 163, to apply foundation and I kind of sort of liked the results. I had to use another brush to completely blend out the foundation as the 163 left me looking a lil’ streaky. This brush works good with liquids and creams. It works fairly decent for powder products as well but, will require additional tools to have a completely seamless canvas.
Now because I collect all (I try to at least) MAC limited brushes. I must note that this brush is not unique. Sonia Kashuk recently released a very similar brush that retails for a whopping $12.99 so, if you missed this one (website says it’s sold out) be sure to head to Target for an outstanding dupe. (review coming soon) The 163 brush is not a must have but, would be great for a professional makeup kit or for someone who really likes dramatic highlights and contours. I would also say this brush may be great for a contour beginner, as it’s a no brainer as to where and how to apply the contouring products.
This brush along with all the other products released with the Face & Body Collection are available at all MAC Cosmetic stores and online at www.maccosmetics.com.
